Bitey: Revolutionizing Calorie Tracking with Gamification

02/08/2024

Summer Semester 2024 / Bitey

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

With obesity rates skyrocketing in the digital era, there is an urgent need for innovative health solutions. By utilizing gamification to promote long-lasting healthy eating habits, Bitey seeks to close the gap in the market by redefining traditional calorie tracking as an engaging activity.

Goal

Bitey aims to develop an app that not only streamlines the process of tracking calories but also enhances its fun and engagement factor. Our goal is to increase user motivation and long-term commitment to healthy eating by incorporating a virtual pet that reacts to the user's dietary decisions.

Methodology

We built Bitey through iterative cycles of building, measuring, and learning using the Lean Startup methodology. We started by developing a Minimum Viable Product (MVP) to test our main theories about user engagement, which featured basic calorie tracking and a virtual pet. We next surveyed and interviewed more than 100 prospective consumers to get their input and confirm our presumptions. By examining the feedback and usage data, we were able to pinpoint areas that needed improvement. Based on the information gathered from user interactions, we iteratively improved Bitey with new features like personalized dietary recommendations and community challenges.

Results

Comparing Bitey to regular apps, several users reported using its gamified features more frequently. According to qualitative feedback, users found the interactive features and virtual pet to be encouraging, which encouraged more regular use. According to surveys, gamification is highly preferred, and many users found the avatar and community challenges to be quite interesting. These components enhanced user satisfaction and suggested the possibility of greater retention rates. Because iterative development reduces waste of resources and allows for ongoing adjustments based on user feedback, it ensures efficient development. Bitey's overall high levels of user satisfaction and engagement validated the idea of a gamified nutrition tracking software.
