Summer Semester 2025 / PathPal

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Navigating a city with mobility challenges, such as using a wheelchair, crutches, or a stroller, can be frustrating. Most digital maps lack real-time information on broken elevators, construction zones, or inaccessible building entrances. For those who depend on barrier-free routes, this results in daily stress, wasted time, and reduced independence. PathPal aims to change that by offering a community-powered, real-time navigation solution for inclusive urban mobility.

Goal

Our goal is to build a real-time, community-driven map that helps people with mobility challenges move freely through the city. Users can contribute and verify accessibility updates for sidewalks, buildings, and public transport stations. The app adapts routes live to account for unexpected obstacles, enabling users to plan safe and accessible journeys that fit their needs.

Methodology

To identify unmet needs, we conducted a survey with 103 individuals with disabilities and their allies. These insights guided our initial problem definition. We then carried out detailed interviews with people who experience mobility challenges as well as experts in urban infrastructure and accessibility. Using the Business Model Canvas, we developed and refined our concept through five rounds of iteration. At each stage, we incorporated feedback to ensure that PathPal aligns with the real-world needs of its users.

Results

We successfully created a first clickable prototype of the PathPal app. The design supports live route adaptation and integrates crowd-sourced updates. This enables users to avoid inaccessible areas and reach their destinations with less frustration. The prototype is ready for future user testing and further technical development. By offering a reliable, user-powered solution, PathPal has the potential to make cities more accessible for all.
