Networking Meeting of internationally renowned University Researchers

24/07/2019

WU Research Group Meeting at WU's Education Sciences Group

Internationally, and especially within European education policy, the goal is to increase the participation of all social groups in higher education. This is seen as an essential driver of social mobility, economic growth, and democratic stability. In this context, however, critical voices are increasingly being raised, questioning the actual value of a policy of “widening participation” for democracies, economies, and individuals. Furthermore, questions are being asked about the life experiences of underrepresented social groups who are now participating more in higher education.

On this topic, the WU Research Group Meeting took place on July 4-5, 2019, at the Education Sciences Group, with four internationally recognized higher education researchers with whom the group cooperates. The guests were:

The foundation for this networking meeting was laid in September 2018. Prof. Erna Nairz-Wirth (Education Sciences Group, WU) conceived and led a joint symposium entitled "Capability and Habitus: Critical perspectives on widening participation, social mobility and student persistence within global higher education settings" at the European Conference on Educational Research (ECER) in Bolzano, Italy.

Discussion of "Hot Topics"

The aim of the Research Group Meeting was to develop a concept for a special issue on the topic of "Higher Education Research" based on the previous symposium. This will be submitted to the renowned European Journal of Education (EJED) in October 2019. The joint editor of the journal, Janet Looney, also took part in the networking meeting and gave a presentation on the journal's focus.

On the first day, the individual research focuses of the respective researchers were presented and current country-specific and transnational "hot topics2 within higher education research were discussed. Later on, all researchers in the network presented their ideas for individual contributions to the special issue. In addition, PhD students had the opportunity to engage in intensive discussions with the individual visiting professors in one-on-one meetings in the afternoon.

On the second day, the concept was finalized and future research collaborations were discussed. The Research Group Meeting succeeded in intensifying international cooperation and networking at the Education Sciences Group and opening up an expanded international research network for young scientists.
