Institute for Language and Discourse in Business (LDB)

Registration for EBC courses

We are currently experiencing a shortage in places for EBC2 and EBC3. At the beginning of next week (Oct 6 or 7), additional spots will be added wherever possible. Those spaces will be assigned to students on waiting lists based on study progress in coordination with VRLS. This is all done manually and will take some time, so please give us the chance to deal with the situation and wait for further information. Neither our lecturers nor the Institute will be able to respond to individual inquiries before that.

Thank you for understanding and your cooperation!

Our mission

The Institute's mission is to make a full contribution to the excellence of research and teaching at the WU, based on the understanding of business communication in English and other foreign languages as an integral part of economic structures and business processes.

We therefore aim to help students become versatile, confident users of English and other foreign languages who are at home with specialized business terminology and command the wide range of communicative skills that executives need in today's global business environment. At the same time, we are committed to the production of high-quality applied research into contemporary English and other langauges, maintaining theoretical and methodological diversity, but with a clear focus on the language of business and economics.

In order to achieve these goals:

  • We provide advanced, up-to-date, research-based teaching in foreign language business communication.

  • We liaise with international academic communities in linguistics, translation studies, management, economics and other relevant disciplines, and maintain an international presence in these communities through publications and contributions to international conferences.

  • We foster links with other departments of WU, both in coordinating curriculum planning and exploring opportunities for interdisciplinary research.

Simultaneously, we are responsive to the demands of the corporate, public and nonprofit sectors for training and consultancy in business communication. In providing services to such outside clients, we combine practical relevance and efficient delivery with scholarly independence and the highest academic standards.

The Institute is part of the Department of Business Communication.
