Bachelor’s thesis topic assignment

Requirements for writing a bachelor’s thesis

BBE:

  • Successful completion of the two Introductory Courses (Business and Society, Contemporary Challenges in Business and Economics) as well as the two courses in the area of Academic Skills (Logic and Methodology of Social Sciences, Introduction to Academic Writing). Further information can be found here

  • Before writing your bachelor thesis, you will have to attend the information session on the BBE bachelor thesis process given by the BBE Program Coordinator. We recommend attending the session between semester 3 and 5. You can find more information about how to write a Bachelor Thesis for the BBE here.

BaWiSo:

  • Successful completion of the STEOP, all business administration courses of the CBK, and the PI Statistics as well as the PI "Grundlagen wissenschaftlichen Arbeitens" ("Foundations of a Scientific Thesis") or "Forschungsmethoden" (Methods of Research).

BaWiRe:

  • Successful completion of the STEOP, all courses of the CBK, and the PI Statistics as well as the PI "Standards rechtswissenschaftlichen Arbeitens und Zitierens" ("Legal Research and Citation Standards").

Please note:

According to §11(3) of the BAWIRE study plan, the topic of the bachelor’s thesis must be selected from the compulsory and elective legal subjects of the study plan!
While it is generally possible to write the bachelor’s thesis in parallel with attending the course "Grundlagen wissenschaftlichen Arbeitens" ("Foundations of a Scientific Thesis"), we recommend that you write the thesis only after successfully completing this course. The institute does not recommend any specific course. Completing a course from any subject area is sufficient.

Prerequisite for writing bachelor’s theses within the SBWL Accounting and Taxation

  • Successful completion of Course I of the SBWL Accounting and Taxation (“Taxation of corporate income”).

The assignment of bachelor’s theses takes place through a multi-stage process:

1

Application

… via our SBWL Accounting and Taxation website during the registration period.

During the registration period, all students of the SBWL Accounting and Taxation have access to a registration link. This will be published during the registration period. By clicking the respective link, you will be automatically registered. A login to Canvas may also be required. The links respond immediately to a single click!

2

Ranking

… of the students based on the GPA of the following courses.

The allocation and ranking of bachelor’s thesis positions is based on the grade in Course I of the Specialization and the GPA of all completed courses at the end of the registration period.

3

Topic assignement

… of the bachelor’s thesis topics and mandatory preliminary meeting.

After the end of the registration period, those students who have been assigned a bachelor’s thesis will be notified via email. All other students will be placed on a waiting list and may move up if a thesis topic becomes available. From the moment the topics are assigned, students have exactly 6 months to work on and submit their bachelor’s thesis. Submission takes place via myWU.

Further information

The topics consist of current questions from the research areas of the supervising academic staff or the scientific disciplines of the participating groups and will only be announced at the assignment meeting.

IMPORTANT: You will not find a list of topics posted in the LEARN club. It is used solely for registration purposes, as the topics are assigned only after the end of the registration period and following confirmation at the mandatory preliminary meeting.

Multiple registrations are permitted. You are free to register for the different pre-registration groups from Finance or the Accounting areas. If you receive confirmation from more than one group, you will be informed and must then decide within 48 hours which area you wish to choose. The confirmations for the other areas will automatically expire, and the places that become available will go to the next students on the waiting list.

Timeline and delay

  • From the moment the topics are assigned, students have exactly 6 months to work on and submit their bachelor’s thesis.

  • In the new allocation system, it is no longer possible to defer the bachelor’s thesis to a later semester or to reserve a slot in advance. By registering, you explicitly declare your intention to write your bachelor’s thesis in the winter semester 2025/26. If you give up a topic that has already been assigned, you will automatically be blocked from participating in the allocation process in the following semester! However, you can deregister at any time before the evaluation deadline using the link (see above).

  • In the case of unjustified delays, supervision may be withdrawn and the topic blocked. To receive a new topic in a future semester, you must register again for the allocation process.

Submission and assessment

  • The completed thesis must be uploaded as a PDF file to myWU by the submission deadline so that it can be checked automatically for plagiarism. The file name must follow the format: “MatriculationNumber.pdf”.

  • Please note that the period between submission and assessment may take up to 4 weeks!

  • The assessment is carried out entirely electronically. As soon as your supervisor has entered and signed the grade in the system, it will be visible to you in the LPIS system.

  • The submission of any additional separate forms, data sets, calculations, illustrations, etc., usually does not take place via myWU, but directly to your supervisor, and should be arranged with them directly.

Formatting requirements and citation rules

  • Please follow the general formatting requirements and citation rules as well as the specific requirements of your supervisor!

  • More information and forms for the bachelor’s thesis can be found here.
