Soziale Dienstleistungen nehmen in der Sozialpolitik bei der Versorgung von benachteiligten Bevölkerungsgruppen eine bedeutende Rolle ein und sind gleichzeitig ein wesentlicher Wirtschaftsfaktor. Häufig ist von einer besonderen Schutzbedürftigkeit der Adressat/innen, von Informationsmängeln und besonderen Marktstrukturen auszugehen. Am "Quasi-Markt" für soziale Dienstleistungen sind sowohl öffentliche Anbieter als auch Nonprofit Organisationen und - zuletzt verstärkt - privat gewinnorientierte Unternehmen aktiv. Forschungsgegenstand ist die Untersuchung der Funktionsweise (Finanzierungsmodi, Beschäftigung) und der Ergebnisse (Zugang zu Leistungen, Qualität und Preise) dieser gemischten Märkte für soziale Dienstleistungen.
