Our vision and approach

The Institute for Data, Energy, and Sustainability (IDEaS) is a data-driven group that examines the energy transition through the lens of innovation and technological change.

We focus on secure, reliable, affordable, and economically viable, energy futures that work for multiple stakeholders at once. Our research explores win-win possibilities — a world where energy transitions serve policymakers, businesses, and society alike, generating evidence to empower better decisions.

Energy innovation from discovery to system change

We study the full life cycle of innovation, from early-stage discovery and technological development to large-scale deployment and system integration.

Scaling energy technologies requires an integrated perspective. Technological development, investment, policy, infrastructure, and system change cannot be considered in isolation.

Our research operates across three interconnected dimensions:

Technology and sector level: What spreads, what scales, and how does it reshape the world?

Firm and investor level: How can public policy mobilize the private sector towards energy goals?

System level: How can infrastructure buildout be enabled and system-level barriers reduced?
