Research

The Institute for Data, Energy, and Sustainability (IDEaS) is dedicated to using data-driven and evidence-based approaches in analyzing the systemic changes associated with the digital and green energy transition and its links to climate change and sustainability goals.

Our research primarily focuses on the broad spectrum of innovation and technological change impacting the energy system. This includes the development and evolution of energy generation, storage, transmission, distribution, and consumption, the broader changes in electrification of transport and industry, and the increasing presence of digitalization. This also extends to the financial, market, and policy dimensions related to emergence and scale-up of new energy and climate technologies, their integration into existing industries or infrastructures, and the dynamics of related value chains. Our aim is to assess how these changes can fulfill environmental and climate objectives while also ensuring the security, reliability, affordability, and equity of energy transitions for diverse stakeholders.

To answer these complex questions, we integrate data science techniques with systems modeling. This approach builds on our interdisciplinary expertise combining innovation studies, energy systems modeling and analysis, climate and energy policy analysis, integrated assessment, and more. These combined approaches are essential for developing strategies that enhance commitment to sustainability objectives across public and private sectors. Our objective is to find effective solutions and foster greater ambition in tackling the most pressing climate and environmental challenges, both locally and globally.
