Democratic innovation and the relevance of constitutional law at the local level

Research field: Urban Transformations Towards Sustainability: A Law and Governance Perspective

After the legal framework for participatory budgeting was explored in a previously completed project, this new research project aims at conducting an in-depth, empirically supported analysis of the relevance of constitutional requirements for democratic innovation at the local level. To this end, interviews are being analyzed and supplemented by further surveys and enquiries. Democratic innovation is also being promoted intensively through the exchange of best practice examples between different cities. In addition, from a constitutional law perspective, the question of the allocation of competences with regard to the international networking activities of Austrian municipalities and the city of Vienna will be addressed.
