About the Conference

Keynote

The keynote will be held by Emmanuel Didier. In his talk "numerical marbling," Emmanuel will talk about the socio-history of quantification. Here's an abstract of the talk:

This talk shows that the socio-history of quantification is not a simple sub-domain of STS. On the contrary, it offers a series of tools thanks to which it is possible to study most social situations in an interesting and fresh way. To do this, first, I give a new definition of quantification. Then I show and explain that numbers marble society through and through giving social scientist interesting grips. Then I insist on the fact that there are three different types of quantitative marbling: those produced by the government, those produced by social activists often contesting the former ones, and finally those produced by global networks, different from the two others. Finally, I show that social processes aiming at purifying society from numbers also deserve our interest.
