Despite declining numbers of asylum seekers, right-wing populism is on the rise.

In a guest commentary in the daily newspaper Die Presse, Judith Kohlenberger analyzes the paradox of falling asylum numbers and rising right-wing populism. The current migration debate is no longer about new arrivals, but about people already living here. Since 1945, Western Europe has experienced diversification without structural support - from guest workers to Balkan refugees. The core problem: successful integration remains invisible, providing fertile ground for authoritarian and reactionary narratives.
