Mission Statement/ About us

Displacement and its effects are one of the most important and controversial issues of the present - and also of the future, as the climate crisis suggests. The Research Institute for Refugee Research and Management (FORM) contributes scientifically sound, independent and data-based analyses to debates on displacement and its consequences in order to enable evidence-based policy design. Our studies and surveys respond to current socio-political challenges in the area of flight and asylum and anticipate future developments.

FORM publishes socio-economic and legal analyses of current and historical refugee dynamics and sheds light on the consequences in selected countries of origin and host countries. FORM conducts both basic research, which closes empirical gaps, and application-oriented research in exchange with practitioners. FORM's research is committed to human rights and focuses on the material, personal and institutional resources for refugee decisions.

FORM is a university research institute of the Vienna University of Economics and Business with high scientific quality. All the prerequisites for interdisciplinary work, professional and methodological excellence and the highest standards of research ethics are in place here. WU's international staff and its networking in the scientific community enable it to integrate the knowledge gained into global trends, while its location in Vienna allows it to focus on pressing national issues.

FORM is based on three main strategic pillars:

  • State-of-the-art research in the field of flight, consequences and dynamics of flight through peer-reviewed publications in relevant scientific journals, edited anthologies and participation in and organization of international scientific conferences.

  • In the area of knowledge transfer , FORM contributes to the establishment of resource-oriented refugee research in economic and social science teaching at Bachelor's and Master's level and the supervision of theses as well as the promotion of young researchers. In addition, there are workshops and further training courses for practitioners.

  • The exchange with stakeholders from business, politics, administration and civil society forms the third pillar together with media work and communication of research results. In this way, FORM acts as a bridge between science, administration and politics, while remaining committed to academic research.
