Migration Research in Dialogue: On the Growing Divide between Academia, Politics and the Media

23/09/2026

Judith Kohlenberger chaired the public panel discussion on the growing disconnect between migration research and the political and media debate.

Together with Rainer Bauböck (European University Institute, Florence), Marcus Engler (German Centre for Integration and Migration Research, DeZIM), the journalist, author and podcaster Solmaz Khorsand, Wiebke Sievers (Institute for Urban and Regional Research at the Austrian Academy of Sciences) and Peter Webinger (Federal Ministry of the Interior), Judith Kohlenberger discussed the growing divide between migration research, politics and the media.

A key focus of the discussion was the relationship between academia and politics as social subsystems, each following its own logic. This relationship can be viewed in different ways from various theoretical perspectives, ranging from Luhmann to Habermas and Bourdieu. The discussion also addressed the roles played by the media, politics and academia in public discourse, and how migration research can help ensure that scientific findings are not oversimplified or taken out of context.

The panel made it clear that knowledge transfer does not end with the production of scientific findings. It is also crucial how research is communicated, contextualised and incorporated into social and political debates. The exchange between academia, the media, politics and public administration is therefore an important component of a knowledge-based engagement with migration.

We would like to thank all participants, as well as the Austrian Academy of Sciences and the University of Vienna, for co-organising the event.
