SROI Analysis "Vollpension" (Get Active Social Business Award Winner Project 2014)

Vollpension is a social catering project that promotes intergenerational exchange between young and old. The non-profit "Vollpension-Verein" and the "Vollpension Generationencafe GmbH" pursue social and societal goals as well as economic ones.

In addition to creating jobs for older employees and pensioners, they offer people a change from their everyday lives. In the course of various events such as senior citizens' storytelling evenings, joint knitting or games evenings, prejudices and clichés about the older population are to be broken down by highlighting different age role models. Older people should not be seen as a burden on society. Rather, the aim is to emphasise the potential associated with the employment of older workers. At the same time, Vollpension aims to promote intergenerational dialogue by employing senior citizens to pass on their life stories and experiences to younger generations.

So far, 17 senior citizens have been employed on a part-time basis at the Vollpension in Vienna, which opened in June 2016. In addition to the income (in addition to their pension), they benefit in particular from the dialogue with the younger generation and an increased sense of self-worth thanks to the varied and meaningful work.

If the total impact generated of € 492,788 is compared with the investments of € 321,481, the resulting social return on investment value is 1.53. This means that every euro invested creates a monetised equivalent value of € 1.53. To summarise, it can be said that the SROI value of 1.53 for the Vollpension is not extraordinarily high. On the one hand, this is due to the comparatively high input of guests in the form of sales revenue and, on the other hand, to the short-term nature of the effects. Compared to prevention projects, projects focussing on supporting senior citizens tend to achieve lower values. However, this does not mean that such projects are worth less from an overall social perspective. Particularly at the individual level of senior citizens, Vollpension provision plays a central role. It contributes to greater integration into their lives, enables them to earn additional income and creates additional opportunities for communication and interaction - especially with the younger generation. However, Vollpension is a special project not only for the senior citizens, but also for the guests. They really appreciate the service and enjoy spending time in the living room atmosphere it creates. Overall, the Vollpension is first and foremost a successful catering business that combines economic and social objectives.

The evaluation was carried out using an SROI analysis, the aim of which is to assess the social added value created by the project as comprehensively as possible. The method aims to explicitly measure the social impact of the project in addition to the financial impact. This analysis is based on the model of the NPO&SE Competence Centre and the CSI Heidelberg (Schober/ Then, 2015), which basically means that the most important stakeholders and their objectives must be identified at the beginning. The input invested is then compared with the output achieved and the outcome per stakeholder in an impact value chain. The outcome must then be adjusted for those effects that would have occurred anyway (deadweight). Finally, in order to calculate the SROI value, the impact must be translated into suitable indicators and substantiated with data. The evaluation period covered the year 2015.
