Researchers spend a significant amount of time attending seminars, conferences, talks, workshops, meetings, retreats, and networking events. These gatherings are often treated as given rather than perceived as nuanced opportunities for professional development.

Gathering can be linked to various personal objectives and can create different kinds of values. Whether it’s about getting feedback or input, the development of expertise and know-how. It can be about building relationships, discovering opportunities or gaining visibility and making yourself know. Sometimes we aim at developing collaborations or securing a research visit. Throughout a professional career, different values will come into focus.

This workshop invites participants to take a step back, reflect on their current professional goals and on how gatherings can support them.

Using a practical framework, participants will explore how gatherings contribute to research success and learn to distinguish between different types of value-creation.

The goal is to support more conscious decisions about where to invest time and attention, enabling researchers to approach scientific interactions with greater intention and impact.
