Position at IIB, other positions and academic career

Laurenz Tinhof is a Postdoctoral Researcher at the Institute for International Business (IIB) at WU Vienna. Prior to this role, he worked as a Research and Teaching Associate at IIB from March 2021 to July 2025, during which he completed his PhD in Social and Economic Sciences.

Laurenz holds an MSc in International Management (CEMS MIM) from Rotterdam School of Management and the University of St. Gallen and earned his Bachelor’s degree in International Business Administration from WU Vienna.

Alongside his academic career, Laurenz has been active as a strategy and data science consultant, working on projects at the intersection of international strategy, sustainability, and applied analytics. He maintains a strong interest in sustainability, both in its ecological and social dimensions.

Research interests

Laurenz’s research lies at the intersection of international business and firm strategy, with a particular focus on multinational investment decisions, government–firm interactions, and value capture in global markets. His work is grounded in viewing the economy as a complex system and applies computational and quantitative research methods—such as matching models and machine learning—to advance the understanding of firms’ strategic choices in international contexts.
