Business Ecosystems

Business ecosystems are networks of a large number of actors including individuals, established firms and new ventures that are tied to an underlying technological system (Baldwin, 2012). Ecosystems differ quite significantly from traditional types of business networks in terms of organization design, value creation, and value capture. Platforms play a major role in these processes.

Research questions include:

  • What different archetypes of business ecosystems can be distinguished?

  • How does a producer-user ecosystem function in which a focal producer firm interacts with lead user entrepreneurs, user communities, and toolkits for user-generated designs?

  • Which synergies can be created by such a producer-user ecosystem?
