Head of the Institute for Family Business, Professor in the Department of Management

Reinhard Prügl is head of the Institute for Family Business. He started his academic career with his doctorate from WU Vienna and was subsequently doing research at the MIT Sloan School of Management (USA) and the University of Innsbruck as part of his academic activities. In autumn 2008 he was appointed to the Chair of Innovation, Technology & Entrepreneurship at the Zeppelin University in Friedrichshafen on Lake Constance, where he started and developed the Friedrichshafen Institute for Family Entrepreneurship (FIF) as its founding scientific director in 2010. In 2023, Reinhard Prügl returned to WU Vienna as the head of the newly established Institute for Family Business.

His research is located at the interface between management, entrepreneurship, and strategy and focuses on the future viability of family businesses and entrepreneurial families, for example with regards to the challenges and opportunities of managing family businesses and business families in the areas of leadership and strategy, succession and generational change, entrepreneurship and corporate venturing, corporate and family governance or innovation and branding. Aspects related to family business branding such as identity and reputation in the context of family businesses are also part of his research.

His work has been published in various journals across different disciplines including Journal of Management Studies, European Management Journal, Entrepreneurship Theory & Practice, Family Business Review, Journal of Family Business Strategy, Journal of Family Business Management, Journal of Small Business Management, Journal of Product Innovation Management, Research Policy, Management Review Quarterly, R&D Management, Technovation, Technological Forecasting & Societal Change, Journal of Product & Brand Management, Psychology & Marketing, Marketing Letters, or Journal of Business Research.

He is a member of the editorial board of Journal of Family Business Strategy and FuS – Zeitschrift für Familienunternehmen und Strategie and he regularly reviews for journals including Family Business Review, Entrepreneurship Theory & Practice, Journal of Small Business Management, Journal of Management Studies, Long Range Planning, or Journal of Business Research and conferences like International Family Enterprise Research Academy (IFERA) or the Academy of Management (AOM) Annual Meeting.

Reinhard Prügl has received several awards for his research, including:
