EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

In this semester’s project course “Garage” our team has developed a scalable startup idea: a company, which deals with the technical development of a smart foil which can be applied to existing windows of any shape, allowing users to control their opacity (from see-through to white) and their dimming (from clear to dark) simultaneously and to a custom degree (any number from 0 to 100%). The startup also does marketing, distribution and after sales services for the product. We have developed a theoretically feasible technical solution, a digital prototype showcasing the features as well as functioning theoretical business model. To realize the startup idea, we would need an investment of approximately 50.000 Euros according to our financial model.

Goal

Our goal was to create a new solution for customers that dealing with window-related issues, such as heat and glare, and conduct the process of developing a theoretically feasible technical solution up to the point where we would need the investment to start developing the first physical prototypes. We also set out to develop a profitable business model and test its feasibility in terms of demand and financial aspects.

Methodology

A mix of surveys, qualitative interviews and internet research helped us to test our hypothesis and show possible technical ways of tackling the pain points of excessive heat and lack of privacy.

The surveys helped us to identify the pain points and test the perception. possible solutions. The open interviews with architects showed that windows are complex systems that need to follow various restrictions and the open interview with an industry expert helped us receive an overview of the market, the competitors and existing solutions. Finally, the internet research enabled us to understand the existing market and find our niche.

Results

We created a hypothetical prototype of a foil which fits on every window due to being cut to fit precise measurements. A combination of two existing technologies- PDLC and EC (together with an isolation layer), enables the foil to turn completely dark and opaque. Because of that every level between a clear window, a complete dark window or a white opaque window for privacy is archivable. Via a physical switch or an app, the customer can set the level of comfort he/she desires.

Furthermore, we have developed a business and financial model primarily relying on comparisons and assumptions, as we have not yet had the opportunity to test it with an actual physical prototype for sale. However, we have thoroughly tested our market and customer thesis, which has bolstered our confidence in establishing a scalable startup. To fully realize our potential, we are seeking investment opportunities.
