From Lab to Market: Winning the First Customer for a Validated Material Innovation

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
AMAG Austria Metall AG has developed CrossAlloy.57 (CA.57), an aluminum alloy combining high strength with an exceptional technological performance profile suitable for numerous potential applications. While the material is technically validated, the commercial path to market remained unclear. This project was commissioned to identify the most promising entry point for CA.57 and define what AMAG needs to do to win its first customer.
Goal
The original brief called for a lead customer profile and a first customer recommendation across three cryogenic tank markets: land-based, mobile, and space. In close alignment with AMAG, the scope was refined. Rather than a single customer profile, which would depend too heavily on AMAG's internal strategy, the team focused on three deliverables: identifying and prioritizing the key adoption barriers customers face, developing concrete CA.57 response strategies for each barrier, and surfacing interview insights that help AMAG understand what certifications, data packages, and market positioning it needs to become attractive to first customers.
Methodology
The analysis combined secondary and primary research. Secondary research covered 61 programmes and segments, drawing on roughly 130 sources. Each market was scored on attractiveness and CA.57 fit, relevant players were ranked by strategic value and accessibility, and hypotheses were formulated. These hypotheses were then validated in 6 expert interviews (SAG for Mobile; Airbus, Absolut System, MT Aerospace, Isar Aerospace and OHB for Space) with engineering, materials-development and R&T program-management contacts, documented and summarized. From the interviews, customer challenges were extracted, weighted by the potential of the players, and matched with concrete CA.57 solution approaches.
Results
Two markets were identified as viable entry points: mobile cryogenic tanks and the space market.
In the mobile market, CA.57's weight advantage over stainless steel translates directly into TCO savings, which interviews confirmed as the primary purchase driver. LH2 transport is already relevant today, not a 2030 topic. SAG is the recommended co-qualification partner, already testing 5xxx alloys and open to joint development. Chart Industries serves as the subsequent scaling target.
In the space market, interviews showed that material adoption is not driven by performance alone. A credible data package meeting ECSS standards, combined with traceability and weldability evidence, is what actually moves decisions. New Space players offer faster entry paths. MT Aerospace is the recommended first partner for data generation and trust-building, followed by pilot projects with Beyond Gravity and RFA, and eventual engagement with established OEMs.
Across both markets, five adoption barriers were prioritized: qualification requirements and data gaps, weldability and heat-affected zone behavior, legacy material lock-in, single-source dependency concerns, and minimum order quantity mismatches. For each, concrete CA.57 response strategies were developed, ranging from building an ECSS-compliant data package and pursuing co-qualification with SAG, to licensing models that address supply dependency concerns.
