Eisbär: From Winter Icon to Alpine Lifestyle Brand
Summer Semester 2026 / Eisbär Sportmoden GmbH
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Eisbär is an Austrian winter headwear brand, deeply rooted in winter sports and Austrian identity but barely present outside this niche. This project combined secondary competitor research with two online surveys in Austria and Germany (n=277) and 18 in-depth interviews to understand how consumers perceive the brand and where growth potential lies. Eisbär shows strong awareness and a best-in-class quality image in Austria, but lacks visibility in Germany and a clear premium-status perception, even among people who know and like the brand. Our competitor analysis also shows that every other premium player in the category operates year-round, while Eisbär remains a winter-only specialist. We recommend leveraging the brand’s proven quality and Austrian origin to expand into alpine-functional summer use cases, rather than into generic lifestyle or fashion territory.
Goal
The goal was to understand how Eisbär is currently positioned in the minds of consumers in Austria and Germany, and whether the brand could credibly extend beyond its winter-only positioning. We set out to map Eisbär against its closest competitors on price and seasonality, test assumptions about brand awareness, quality and premium perception, and assess genuine consumer openness toward a summer product line. The aim was an evidence-backed positioning recommendation the company can act on.
Methodology
We used a mixed-methods approach. Secondary research benchmarked Eisbär against 16 competitor brands on price and seasonality of product range, based on official online shops. Primary research combined two Pollfish surveys (n=177 in Austria, n=100 in Germany) covering brand awareness, associations, quality and premium perception, price sensitivity, and summer-product openness, with 18 in-depth interviews to validate and enrich the quantitative findings. Triangulating survey data with interviews let us separate surface-level brand recognition from genuine attitudinal drivers.
Results
Eisbär is the top-of-mind winter headwear brand in Austria with strong aided awareness in both markets, though visibility in Germany is considerably lower. Quality perceptionis exceptionally strong across all research methods, yet consumers draw a clear distinction between quality and premium status. Price is the most frequently cited purchasebarrier, even though most respondents would pay more for European production. The issue is not the price itself but how the value is communicated. Austrian origin drivespurchase intent where it is known, but remains largely unrecognized in Germany despite clear interest once made aware. Eisbär is also the only true premium winter specialistin the market, while every comparable competitor already operates year-round. Consumer openness to summer products is real and consistent across both markets, withhiking as the most natural entry point. We recommend Eisbär pursue alpine-functional category extension into summer hiking gear, paired with stronger communication of itsAustrian origin, particularly in Germany.
