Summer Term 2023 / Easy Safe

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Outdoor sports have seen a significant upswing during corona pandemic due to governmental restrictions for indoor activities. Consequently, many unexperienced amateur athletes are/were active, sometimes overestimating themselves and their equipment. Therefore, injuries while doing sports increased, resulting in more and more emergency calls for rescue services.

Focus

Due to the relatively low barrier of amateurs to plan hiking trips, self-treatable injuries especially in this specific sport sector happen very often. 1400 (75% of total hiking accidents) of the hiking injuries are caused by falling, stumbling, or slipping, while 50% of all hikers do not carry a first aid kit and even more do not even know how to use it. This is why we want to focus on hiking in the first step.

Goal

Our aim is to provide suitable equipment in case of an emergency while being active. This can be done by offering a first aid kit suitable and customized for the respective sport with an additional guideline to provide first aid on a professional level. The use of our product should lead to faster healing processes especially of sport injuries by guided first aid, avoiding unnecessary long lasting health issues and inflammations.

Methodology

In order to ensure developing the right product for a market that can be highly enlarged by attracting people’s awareness of getting injured while being active, we did about 25 potential customer discussions, 6 expert talks (mountain rescuers, ski instructors, alpine guide), 5 retailer interviews (retailers who sell first aid kits) and 1 survey with about 60 participants. Simultaneously, we have browsed statistics to underpin our collected data.

Results

Our product development was highly influenced and adapted by our customer interviews and by our own research into sports-related injuries. The first aid kit consists of several pockets which enable the user to divide and manage its content very easily. By using an elastic material our kit can be rolled up for space-optimized transportation. Our first aid kit also comes along with an instruction guideline, whether retrievable online via a QR code on the kit or offline via a phone app. The guideline contains all information and emergency numbers which are needed to help injured people depending on the type and severity of the injury. With the combination of a sport specific first aid kit and an instruction guideline we offer the perfect solution to strengthen the feeling of well-being of our customers while being active.

Roadmap

After completing the phase of product development, entering the market and reaching our sales target of 65000 first aid kits for hiking in Austria within 3 years, we want to expand into the DACH-region within 4 years by also offering specific first aid kits for mountain biking, climbing and ski touring. Having gained a foothold in this region, we want to expand worldwide and extend our product range by first aid kits for vehicles.
