Disaster Proof: Insurance Strategies for a Changing Climate

22/07/2025

Summer Semester 2025 / Generali Versicherung

The increasing frequency and intensity of climate-related disasters poses a growing challenge to both individuals and insurance providers. This development highlights the urgency for the insurance sector to move beyond reactive claims processing and toward a more proactive role in climate adaptation and risk prevention. Many customers still underestimate the risks in their environment or lack the necessary information and tools to take effective preventive action.

Goal

Among a range of innovative ideas, from smart insurance technologies to regulatory reform, one solution stood out for its feasibility, broad customer reach, and high relevance: a tailored awareness campaign that bridges the gap between climate risks and individual action. This campaign presents an important opportunity for Generali to position themselves as trusted partners in resilience building.

Methodology

Along with our project partner Generali, our student consulting team developed a strategic concept based on international best practices, benchmarking analyses, and an in-depth assessment of existing product portfolios. For that, a comprehensive desk research, as well as internal and external interviews were conducted.

Results

The campaign concept is structured around three core pillars: raising awareness, fostering engagement, and building long-term trust. To ensure a high degree of relevance, we differentiated between two key customer segments: young, tech-savvy customers and older, trust-oriented older individuals, and outlined specific communication and engagement strategies for each. The result is a scalable, impact-driven awareness campaign with concrete strategic recommendations that can be adapted by insurers to strengthen their customer relationships, reduce future claims, and contribute meaningfully to climate resilience.

The awareness campaign promotes and expands Generali’s existing offerings, aligns with public expectations around corporate climate responsibility, and creates measurable impact at both individual and societal levels. Ultimately, the campaign provides Generali with a powerful tool to turn risk awareness into resilience - and to transform its role from insurer to active enabler of climate adaptation.
