A digital procurement function within Configon Core
Summer Semester 2025 / Festo SE & Co. KG
This project investigates the strategic and commercial feasibility of integrating a digital B2B ordering function into Configon Core, a SaaS product configurator developed by Resolto and used across engineering-driven industries. In partnership with FESTO and WU Vienna, the team assessed how this transformation could streamline procurement workflows for SMEs, enable new monetization strategies for Resolto and Cadenas, and strengthen Configon’s role within the Industry 4.0 landscape.
Goal
The core objective was to develop a robust business case for embedding a direct ordering function into Configon Core. This includes evaluating potential user benefits, technical requirements, and suitable revenue models. The project aimed to determine how Configon could evolve from a configuration tool to a full-fledged digital procurement interface, particularly for small and mid-sized enterprises in mechanical and electrical engineering.
Methodology
A qualitative research approach was applied. Ten expert interviews were conducted with decision-makers from procurement, engineering, and management across multiple SMEs. In addition, secondary research from consultancies (e.g., McKinsey, BCG, PwC) and industry reports informed the market and competitor analysis. The team benchmarked Configon against existing CPQ tools, assessed ERP integration needs, and explored monetization strategies such as commissions, licensing, and data-based services.
Results
The findings support the viability of two main models:
(1) a Direct Active Sales Model, in which Configon acts as a procurement interface for engineering firms, forwarding orders to suppliers via dropshipping, and
(2) an Indirect Passive Model, where Configon is embedded into partner platforms and operates in the backend.
The team recommends launching the Direct Active Model first, as it offers faster monetization, stronger user engagement, and more control over the customer journey. The indirect model is suited for long-term scaling through manufacturer and retailer partnerships.
Both models unlock new value for Resolto and Cadenas, and support FESTO’s strategic goals around digitalization. A phased implementation plan and modular pricing strategy have been outlined to ensure scalability, integration feasibility, and partner alignment.
