Successful transition design in education, or smooth transition, is a central topic in education policy discussions and considerations related to school development. Every transition to a new educational institution (kindergarten, school, college, university, other lifelong learning institutions) is a critical life event and can increase or reduce social inequalities. Unsuccessful transitions are one of the causes of career breaks and declining educational aspirations, i. e., a declining willingness to engage in lifelong learning. They therefore pose political and economic risks.
