A project report written by the Research Institute for Cryptoeconomics and the Regional Centre of Expertise on Education for Sustainable Development.

Download our easy to read project report "Blockchain, Web3 and the SDGs" written by the Research Institute for Cryptoeconomics and the Regional Centre of Expertise on Education for Sustainable Development on how blockchain technology can support the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) defined by the United Nations.
The report is an output of a research project conducted at Vienna University of Business and Economics (WU Vienna). It explores the Agenda 2030 and different aspects of the innovation needed to achieve the SDGs. Blockchain technology is explained further by looking into smart contracts, oracles, tokens and future research potential, such as interoperability and legal challenges. We then assessed blockchain-based applications that help address "good governance" and summarized it in 7 use cases:

  • Supply chains

  • Impact assessment

  • Collective value creation with purpose-driven tokens

  • Corruption prevention

  • Inclusion of undocumented and underbanked

  • Impact entrepreneurship and impact investment

  • Energy markets
