SDG 12 Responsible Consumption and Production
SGD 12, Responsible Consumption and Production, aims to ensure that consumption and production patterns become sustainable. WU student Mackenzie and STaR project assistant Katerina introduce us to their perspective and interpretation of this goal, noting that 1.3 billion tons of food are wasted each year (see also our videos on SDG 2, Zero Hunger). When it comes to food and diet, Mackenzie recommends that we incorporate what works for us – whether this be going completely plant-based or simply integrating meat or dairy-free days. Katerina’s suggestion is to plan out our meals and what we need for these meals so that we aren’t left wasting leftover items. We can also eliminate other kinds of waste from our lives by, for example, only using reusable water bottles and coffee cups. Most importantly, it is necessary to be conscious of how each individual action adds up and contributes to the impact made globally.

In the second video, Mackenzie goes on to interview Dr. Doris Schneeberger, University Assistant at the Institute of Change Management and Management Development and STaR Intellectual Community member. As an animal ethicist, Dr. Schneeberger cares deeply about animals and about the unsustainable nature of the animal industry. She is motivated by the belief that humans should not perceive themselves as better than or above other species on the planet. In terms of steps being taken to transform the animal industry, she is excited about clean animal products and the movement towards plant-based eating.

In the video below, STaR graduate assistant, Rohan talks to Michael Mitsakos, The CCO of Arkeon. Arkeon is a food tech startup based in Vienna that turns CO2 into protein ingredients for food. Michael gives a brief overview of the process that Arkeon uses to create the protein ingredients and the products that they use them for. Finally, Rohan talks to Michael about his personal connection to sustainability asks him to share his thoughts on how we can live a more sustainable future.
SDG 12 - Michael Mitsakos & Rohan
In this video, STaR graduate assistant, Rohan talks to Charlotte Kottusch, the co-founder of the food policy council of Vienna, an initiative that is focused on creatin sustainable food systems in Vienna. Charlotte talks about the importance of using our land in a sustainable and long-term way. She also talks about the Welt Teller Feld, a project that showcases the importance of farming nutritious food in a sustainable manner. Finally, as with all our interviews, Rohan asks Charlotte to share her tips for living a more sustainable life.
