Research Mission Statement

The influence of information on the economy and on conducting business is continually increasing and has profound effects on all sectors of modern economy as well as all aspects of society. The Institute of Information Business focuses its research efforts on business process management, knowledge management, decision support systems, intelligent data management and the semantic Web. The institute is committed to high-quality research in the academic area, including mentoring selected students to become future researchers. Furthermore, partnerships with industry associations, companies and the public administration are strengthened to stay in touch with the rapid development of the field.

Privacy Aspects for Data Analytics in Industrial Automation Environments in the context of the European general Data Protection GDPR

In the course of their "Call for Ideas: Data Analytics in Industrial Automation Environments" Siemens asked the Institute for Service Marketing and Tourism and the Institute for Information Business Mehr über dieses Thema to study possible starting points for a joint collaboration project between Siemens and the Vienna University of Economics and Business (WU) in the area of Data Protection and Data Integration. It roots in Siemens 2018 ¿Call for Ideas: Data Analytics in Industrial Automation Environments¿ and aims at topics of Smart Sales, Customer Analytics and Smart Cities in the light of GDPR with a particular focus on privacy, data protection, protection of Intellectual property rights for such protection that still enable ¿fishing in the ponds of available data¿ in a big enterprise. We propose multi-disciplinary research in different areas, such as in enabling technologies (such as (i) anonymization techniques and (ii) knowledge graphs augmented with automated policy management) but also (iii) the investigation of legal boundaries and (iv) Smart Sales and Marketing Analytics.

A Method for Facilitating Process Exploration

Business process management is an approach used by many organizations to analyze and continuously improve their business processes. BPM is regarded as a discipline that primarily uses exploitative Mehr über dieses Thema process innovation to provide considerable benefits to a company. However, while such exploitation addresses the needs of existing company customers, designing and introducing products and services for new markets and customer sets requires explorative process innovation. This type of process innovation typically entails departure from existing processes such that new processes could be introduced that will support the novel products and services. Therefore, for BPM to be responsive not only to existing customers, but to new customer segments, beyond exploitative process innovation, a novel method is necessary that will facilitate explorative process innovation in organizations and can be integrated with existing BPM methods and techniques. In this project, we address the research problem of explorative process innovation in organizations. The key questions we aim to answer are: 1) What are the factors that enable explorative process innovation in organizations? 2) Based upon which principles can an appropriate method for process exploration in organizations be introduced? 3) How can explorative process innovation be integrated with existing BPM methods?

Cyber-Physical Social Systems for City-wide Infrastructures

The CitySPIN project aims to create a platform for cyber-physical social systems in order to facilitate innovative Smart City infrastructure services. The project is at the forefront of cyber-physical Mehr über dieses Thema cyber-physical systems research and aims to extend those systems with a social dimension (i.e., cyber-physical social systems). CitySpin is an Austrian research project funded by the Austrian Federal Ministry of Transport, Innovation and Technology (BMVIT) and the Austrian Research Promotion Agency (FFG) under the program ¿ICT of the Future¿. The CitySPIN project starts in October 2017 with a duration of 30 months and a project consortium that consists of TU Wien, WU Wien, Wiener Stadtwerke and Semantic Web Company.

Business Process Optimization Toolkit

In cooperation with Phactum Softwareentwicklung GmbH, the Institute for Information Business is involved in the Business Process Optimization Toolkit project, funded by FFG. The project is focussed on Mehr über dieses Thema on the automation and monitoring aspects of business processes through novel software and hardware solutions. More specifically, the implementation of processes through innovative technologies for real-world interaction and digital information elaboration is in the scope of the project. Big streams of generated data are thus meant to be analysed with new techniques for the accurate tracking and status visualisation of running processes.

SPECIAL - Scalable Policy-awarE linked data arChitecture for prIvacy, trAnsparency and compLiance

The SPECIAL project will address the contradiction between Big Data innovation and privacy-aware data protection by proposing a technical solution that makes both of these goals realistic. Only a minority of citizens regularly participate in collective decisions or draw on data­ rich evidence to engage in public deliberation processes. Similarly, the set of citizens with the Mehr über dieses Thema sociotechnical capacity to leverage available Open Data is small. At the same time, governments, developer communities and affected communities remain disconnected: in this context, the CommuniData project aims at nothing less than turning the game upside down; we will enable a data­-driven approach to collective decision making that (i) translates Open Data into actionable knowledge for physical, local communities, (ii) connects administrations and citizens through an integrated knowledge repository that builds on Open Data and related user­ generated content, (iii) provides novel visual tools to navigate and understand patterns this knowledge repository, and (iv) enables communities to leverage, co-create and discuss Open Data to solve e.g. urban sustainability challenges in a collaborative fashion.

Privacy and Usabiliy

With the rapid accumulation and processing of personal data by numerous organizations, it is of paramount importance to protect people from adverse uses of their data, while allowing them to enjoy the Mehr über dieses Thema the benefits the use of these data can possibly provide. This is the question of protecting citizens' privacy, while enabling them to make informed decisions regarding their actions with privacy implications. The Privacy & Us innovative training network will train thirteen creative, entrepreneurial and innovative early stage researchers (ESRs) to be able to reason, design and develop novel solutions to questions related to the protection of citizens' privacy, considering the multidisciplinary and intersectoral aspects of the issue. ESRs will be trained to face both current and future challenges in the area of privacy and usability. Privacy & Us offers a combination of research-related and transferable competence skills that will enhance the career perspectives of the ESRs in both the academic and non-academic sectors. The ESRs will receive comprehensive training and engage in intersectoral and multidisciplinary collaboration. Through this collaborative effort, the project will make a significant contribution and impact to the ESRs future careers. It will also contribute to shaping future privacy policies and practices in Europe and will significantly advance the state of the art in privacy and usability research.

RISE_BPM networks world-leading research institutions and corporate innovators to develop new horizons for Business Process Management (BPM).
