New practical publication: Refugee Talents – Integrating Refugees into the Workplace

20/03/2026

In her latest publication, our institute director, PD Dr Judith Kohlenberger, has explored integration in the day-to-day reality of business life.

In light of demographic change and a growing labour shortage, the employment of refugees is becoming an opportunity for business innovation and growth. However, the first step can be a challenge, particularly for small and medium-sized enterprises that do not have extensive HR resources.

For this reason, our institute’s director, PD Dr Judith Kohlenberger, has conducted research into the integration of refugees, examining various levels and perspectives on the subject. To this end, she conducted interviews with representatives from large corporations, family-run businesses and SMEs, as well as with refugee employees.

She has published the findings of this research in her new book, *Refugee Talents: Workplace Integration of Refugees*, which highlights the key points from the interviews.

The book provides practical tools and methods for overcoming obstacles and successfully integrating the first refugee employee into the team.

The first part of the book provides a theoretical overview of the labour market integration of refugees in Austria and Europe, and examines groups that are particularly relevant to the labour market of the future, such as women and Ukrainian displaced persons. This is followed by practical tips on recruitment and integration, based on international studies. Finally, company representatives and refugees share their personal experiences and provide valuable insights into successful integration strategies.

The book is aimed at HR managers, executives and students of social and economic sciences. It combines theory with practice, making it a valuable reference work for anyone interested in the opportunities and challenges of integration.

It is available hier.
