BBE Spezialization Supply Chain and Operations Management (SCOM)
The whole business world consists of supply chains! Students that show interest in how products or services originate in a global environment and how they reach their customers in an efficient and effective manner will find their answers in SCOM. Furthermore, students that have already gathered first practical experiences in Supply Chain and Operations Management can deepen their knowledge in this specialization. Good quantitative and methodological skills are as expected from the applicants as motivation, communication and cooperation skills.
SCOM covers all topics related to Supply Chain and Operations Management. These include, among many others, materials procurement, manufacturing of products and the distribution to the customers.
The students – first – receive a broad common body of knowledge in the mandatory Course 1 to 3 dealing with topics of Supply Chain and Operations Management while at the same time working with different methods, tools and systems to apply the knowledge hands-on.
In the second part of the elective courses, students can focus their interests onto different special topics in Course 4, e.g. International Supply Chain Operations, Service Operation Management, Supply Chain Planning or Humanitarian Logistics. The last Course 5 is a seminar, which explicitly aims to enable student to write a Bachelor Thesis in the field of Supply Chain and Operations Management.
BEE Course overview WS2021/22
Given the broad knowledge base that the students of SCOM receive, the path is open to careers in many different fields. These range from experts in manufacturing and logistics operations to sourcing and procurement specialists as well as inventory and distribution managers.
SCOM is a joint offer by the Institute of Transport and Logistics Management (ITL) and the Institute for Production Management (PM). Courses are offered each semester.

Course 2: Supply Chain Management (VUE, obligatory course)

In this course, the essence of supply chain management in success of a business is emphasised, and it aims to provide the students a good understanding of developing and managing supply chains in line with the needs of the business.
The course starts with basics of supply chain management, giving first-hand experience of inter-relational behaviour in supply chains. Then prerequisites and goals to configure and analyse supply chains will be discussed, including supply chain strategy, planning and controlling. The course concludes with recent supply chain trends and best practices for supply chain management in turbulent times.
To ensure that up to date business insights are given, current trends and innovations are discussed with the students.

Course 3: Supply Chain Modelling and Design (PI, obligatory course)

After successfully passing this course, students should be able to know and apply the models and theories of network design in supply chains. Furthermore, they should be able to develop and validate optimization models that allow them to compare different network design configurations and to find the optimal network design for a given situation.

Course 4: International Supply Chain Operations (PI, elective course)

At the end of this course, students should have a basic knowledge about actual trade practice, including contracting, customs, documentary paperwork, transport management as well as security, compliance and risk management issues. This should enable them to plan successfully shipping and handling for international goods movements. Accordingly, the course is held in sessions structured as follows:

This course covers three planning hierarchies: tactical and operational planning problems in inventory management, and strategic network planning. It focuses on identifying problem types and finding the most relevant information in the problems in order to formulate the problems to assist decision-making. This course investigates the special requirements of logistics in disasters like earthquakes. Additionally, appropriate methods for decision support are presented and discussed. Cooperation and coordination form a core concern for decision makers in disaster management. Therefore, the EU decision process for implementing humanitarian missions will be described and the role of the logistics cluster will be analysed.

We will provide you with some ideas for deepening your knowledge in the manifold field of Operations Management. In the course of this lecture, you will then create your own seminar paper, thereby learning and applying the basic rules of academic writing. After successful completion of the seminar, you should be able to critically evaluate and discuss published results from the literature. Furthermore, you should have acquired the skills to write an academic paper of high quality and to present your work effectively.

Course 5: Seminar 5: Project Management (FS)

This seminar introduces students to the basic concepts and principles of Project Management. It covers project objectives plan, work break down structure, project scheduling, project stakeholder management, risk management, project organisation and roles. Students apply these methods and concepts on their training projects and learn how to consider sustainable development principles in project management. Students will find themselves logistic projects and analyse their project management practices. This interactive course is both theoretically based and hands on. By that, it allows insights into the project management practice and enables students to reflect benefits and limits of project management and prepare them to apply project management in business context.
