Biography

Alexander is a lecturer at the Institute for Information Systems and Society.

He joined the institute's team as a teaching and research associate in March 2012. Alexander's research interests focus on electronic privacy and security as well as value-based and ethical system design. His doctoral thesis deals with the concept of time for introducing a "Forgetting Internet" and develops a theory of privacy for the long-term online retention of people's personal information. Another stream of his work is about balancing markets for personal information with privacy. The results of this work were discussed at the European Forum Alpbach and selected concepts have been adopted by the EU-U.S. Privacy Bridges Project on redefining Transatlantic privacy agreements.

Alexander holds a doctoral degree in the economic and social sciences with a major in business information systems (Wirtschaftsinformatik) from Vienna University of Economics and Business. He received a master's degree (2012) and a bachelor's degree in business information systems from Vienna University of Economics and Business. During his studies he specialized in IT governance, risk and compliance, information management, e-services and ubiquitous computing. He partly completed his studies at the University of Alberta, Canada as an exchange student. Moreover, as a student he has collected short-term work experience in different industries including paper and packaging, non-profit, safety-critical communication solutions and IT user support. Moreover, he served as a standardization expert for digital marketing and privacy at the Austrian Standards Institute. In 2015 he was awarded the professional title Engineer in electronics and technical informatics.

In 2012 Alexander was awarded the appreciation prize of the Austrian ministry for science and research.

After completing his doctoral research in September 2015, Alexander left to work within industry.

Alexander is a certified CIS information security manager according to ISO 27001 and a certified risk manager for information security according to ISO 27005. Also, he is an ISACA-certified auditor for the IT-security of critical infrastructures according to § 8a (3) BSIG of the German "IT-Sicherheitsgesetz".
