Working Paper: Can Blockchain Technology Restore Trust in Nigerian Academic Publishing?

02/03/2026

Nigerian academic publishing is currently characterized by a crisis of trust, marked by predatory practices, slow peer review processes, inadequate incentive structures, infrastructural deficits, and systemic opacity that undermines global credibility. This paper presents a sentiment analysis on the use of blockchain technology in the context of Nigerian academic publishing based on thirty interviews with a diverse range of Nigerian stakeholders, including university administrators, faculty, students, publishers, ICT experts, and legal consultants. By investigating the potential of blockchain technology to serve as a transformative truth layer for the ecosystem, this paper adds to the growing discourse on application of ICT technologies in academic publishing.
