Study Report on Austrian Foundations in Science and Research

Every year, charitable foundations in Austria allocate around 140 to 150 million euros to social causes. Science and research are among their most important areas of funding. In collaboration with the Association for Charitable Foundations, we have now investigated for the first time the role played by national and international foundations in the Austrian science and research sector.

The results reveal a high degree of international networking within the Austrian research landscape: around 500 funding relationships with a total of 280 foundations were identified across more than 300 science and research institutions. Two-thirds of the foundations are international, whilst one-third are national. Charitable foundations from Germany, the USA and Switzerland are particularly well represented.
