Launch of a New International Research Project: Civil Society in CEE

09. März 2026

The study focuses on the overall situation in CEE as well as individual country contexts.

Together with a team of researchers across 17 countries, the Center for Social Entrepreneurship and Social Innovation has launched a new project to study the recent developments in civil society in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE). This project aims to provide up-to-date insights for academics and practitioners, a decade after our first study on the topic.

The study focuses on the overall situation in CEE as well as individual country contexts. It is aimed to serve as an important resource both in the academic and practical context and addresses key issues relevant to local actors.

Results will be published in reports and presented publicly in Spring 2027 to policymakers and ecosystem stakeholders. The project is supported by the ERSTE Foundation.

The SESI team contributing to this research includes Dr. Peter Vandor, Dr. Reinhard Millner, and Martin Mehrwald.
