Der Inhalt dieser Seite ist aktuell nur auf Englisch verfügbar.

On 12 April additional workshops will be offered. A limited number of spots is available for Workshops A and B. To declare your interest in joining the workshops please refer to the form below.

Workshop A will focus on AI-resilient teaching: designing courses and assessment formats.

Workshop B will portray Showcases of XR-Learning Experiences with the opportunity to get hands-on experience.

Workshop report

Showcases of XR-Learning Experiences was one of the post-conference workshops of the Seamless Learning Conference 2024. The workshop took place on 12 April 2024 at WU Vienna’s Flex Center. The workshop started with the presentation of the participating projects, after that hands-on experience at the project’s stations was possible for the participants.

Presentations and stations:

Project MyScore, Patrick Querl & Raymond Chandra, RWTH Aachen University
MyScore, is a free, open source platform for avatar-based teaching and learning in VR. It complements university teaching with immersive, collaborative and location-independent learning experiences. MyScore offers virtual labs, auditoriums and excursions. This permits students and lecturers to access places that cannot be visited so easily in reality. It also offers the potential for innovative teaching concepts, e.g. simulation of teaching scenarios (in Higher Education), virtual laboratories, or simulation of information.

Virtual Skills Lab project, Klaus Neundlinger & Georg Regal, in-scope, Austrian Institute of Technology
The research project Virtual Skills Lab supports team leaders to train their social skills in a prototypical VR scenario. In the simulation, they sit in their office and communicate with Mira, an avatar who represents an employee. After the conversation, trainees are asked to go through the situation again and reflect on their ability to take the employee’s perspective. The aim of the research project was to test and evaluate to which extent VR can be used to design and deliver experience based learning units for soft skills development.

Remote Assistance for Home Care Workers, Birgit Trukeschitz, Philipp Rameder & Philipp Kolmann, WU Vienna & FH Wiener Neustadt

Birgit Trukeschitz from WU Vienna and her colleagues from FH Wiener Neustadt reported about outcomes of the EC-funded project “Care about Care” with a focus on remote assistance for care workers and informal caregivers. The expert center and the care workers on site are connected via a video and audio call, images are transmitted via AR-Glasses. The care worker has the hands free to act and is supported remotely by the experts who can see through his/her eyes. A data glove completes the “insight” of the experts into the care work.

Virtual rhetoric training, Michael Posch & Corinna Stiefelbauer, WU Vienna

In face-to-face classrooms, it is often difficult to simulate realistic presentation scenarios. The implementation of virtual reality (VR) in combination with an AI-based evaluation opens new ways to specifically help students in developing their individual rhetoric skills. The course "Presenting effectively and arguing convincingly" in the Bachelor programs of WU (Vienna University of Economics and Business) piloted a pedagogical concept which integrates such digital and also non-digital didactic elements into the course. The course design is shown in “Atlas Gute Lehre”, an Austrian good practice collection (with an English summary).

Virtual Campus meets AI, Mathias Janko & Florian Mosböck, WU Vienna

Mathias Janko and Florian Mosböck presented a combination of VR and AI in one of the rooms of WU's virtual campus. This campus was designed for hosting students and teachers of international courses. One of the rooms is the so-called "self-study room", in which lecturers can provide learning content for students asynchronously to normal teaching. The AI was asked to design an exhibition about the development of AI in this self-study room. The concept and the proposed content were then implemented using various AI tools. However, the self-study room can be equipped in different ways to suit the learning aims of different courses. Teachers of WU and of the university alliance ENGAGE can get to know the virtual teaching and learning spaces via the FLEX Lab and discuss possible use cases.

The workshop Showcases of XR-Learning Experiences was followed by a networking meeting in which the Immersive Learning Squad of the European Digital Education Hub | European Education Area (europa.eu) and uniVERSEty, a network for virtual teaching and learning rooms in higher education, were presented.
