Legal framework for participatory budgeting in Vienna

Research field: Urban Transformations Towards Sustainability: A Law and Governance Perspective

Austrian cities and municipalities increasingly use participatory budgeting as a governance tool. Participatory budgeting is typically praised for its potential democratic benefits. In the Austrian examples, participatory budgeting instruments are intended to ensure involvement of residents when designing a more livable and sustainable city. For the positive effects of participatory budgeting to materialize, a clear institutional framework is needed. This also includes the legal framework, which will be analyzed in the project, especially from the perspective of public law.
