Special Issue on ‘Digital Services of General Interest’ published

23/12/2025

Tobias Polzer and Stephan Leixnering co-curated and contributed to a Special Issue in the journal ‘der moderne staat’

Services of General Interest are a key focus of the European social model, particularly in German-speaking countries and in the urban context. However, these services are currently undergoing major changes due to new technologies and the dynamics of digital transformation. Corresponsing developments are often discussed unter the label of ‘Digital Services of General Interest’. A recent Special Issue of the journal ‘der moderne staat’ has been published on ‘Digital Services of General Interest – problems, positions and interdisciplinary perspectives’. It sheds light on the current state of academic debate on the concept and provides perspectives for future research and practitioners. Tobias Polzer (together with Ulf Papenfuß) served as co-curator of the journal. Stephan Leixnering (together with Stephan A. Jansen) contributed a dialogue between two essays to the issue.
