Dying For Some New Clothes

Working Conditions in Global Supply Chains

The collapse of the Rana Plaza garment factory complex in Bangladesh 2013 cost the lives of more than 1,000 garment workers and drew attention to the inhumane conditions under which our clothes are produced. The Rana Plaza workers made clothes for global brands such as Primark, Zara, and Benetton. What have we learned from Rana Plaza and other scandals related to labor rights violations in global supply chains? What advancements have been made so far? What works and what does not? Ten years after the most devastating textile accident in history, this lecture examines how sustainable our global supply chains really are and provides an overview of recent developments such as mandatory supply chain diligence.

AI and Equal Opportunities

How (un)fair is artifical intelligence?

The use of artificial intelligence (AI) is steadily increasing in all areas of life. Since all AI systems are fed by humans, they reflect human preferences and assumptions. Can we program fairness into AI systems? Do diverse teams also create diverse databases? And what can we learn from AI? Together with experts, we will be discussing how we can ensure that AI becomes a technology that benefits everyone.

Among other debaters: Verena Dorner is professor of information systems and heads the Institute for Digital Ecosystems at Dpt. ISOM, WU Vienna. Her research focuses on the interdependencies between digital (eco)systems, algorithm/AI design, and user behavior.

The Latest Trends in AI

We’re about to see a new artificial intelligence (AI) revolution, driven by two major trends: first, the development of hybrid AI systems that combine techniques from AI’s historically disparate sub-fields, and second, human-centric AI, which gives humans more control over these powerful, intelligent systems. Can these trends help us master the technical, legal, and ethical challenges AI is still facing? In this lecture, WU Professor Marta Sabou will give an overview of these AI trends and discuss their impact on WU research and teaching.

Requirements and Constraints

With its innovative approach to decentralized computation and assets management, blockchain technology has the potential to solve many system scalability, reliability, security, and trust issues. But the development of blockchain systems is complex and creates new, intricate systems engineering and cryptoeconomics challenges. In this talk, we present an essential blockchain overview. We discuss the critical requirements and constraints based on our previous research and propose several exciting directions for future research.

Die Chance zur Reindustrialisierung?

Big Data. Internet of Things. Industrie 4.0. Die digitale Transfor- mation bringt neue industrielle Techniken, wie beispielsweise den 3D-Druck, hervor, die die Produktion der Zukunft drastisch verändern werden. Die Diskussion um die „Next Production Revolution“ (ein Begriff der OECD) ist kontrovers. Die einen setzen große Hoffnungen in die neuen Möglichkeiten und orten Innovationspotenzial für eine ROI, die anderen verbinden primär Ängste damit. Was bedeutet die digitale Revolution für unsere Arbeitsplätze? Werden Menschen zunehmend obsolet? Oder ist es genau anders herum und verloren geglaubte Produktionsschritte in „Value Chains“ können sogar wieder nach Europa zurückgeholt werden?

Kryptowährungen

Das Studierendenkonto der Zukunft?

Bereits die griechischen Philosoph/inn/en berichteten über die Verwunderung und den Ärger der älteren Generation über das Verhalten der Jugend. Ein Aspekt dieses Phänomens ist das Auftreten von bisher unbekannten, primär von der jungen Generation nachgefragten Finanzinstrumenten, die für Außenstehende als irrationale Blasen wahrgenommen werden. Aktuell manifestiert sich dieses Phänomen in der Nachfrage nach Kryptowährungen und ICOs. An der WU hat sich im Rahmen des Forschungsinstituts für Kryptoökonomie ein Students Chapter gebildet, das sich mit diesen neuen Finanzinstrumenten beschäftigt. Im Rahmen des Events werden die Ergebnisse einer explorativen Studie zu Einstellungen und Motiven dieser Gruppe zu Finanzfragen vorgestellt und mit Vertreter/inne/n des Students Chapters und der Finanzbranche diskutiert.
