WU’s Health Economics and Policy Group invites you to attend the doctoral dissertation defense of

Thomas Arnhold, MSc (WU), BSc (WU), titled

“Cognitive Inequalities in Europe: A Gendered Perspective on the Roles of Employment and Retirement.”

In light of an aging population, understanding how cognitive functioning can be maintained into older age is a policy priority. Comprising three research papers, this dissertation examines how employment and retirement shape gendered inequalities in later-life cognitive functioning in Europe. The results show that the cognitive consequences of employment and retirement are heterogeneous and gender-specific, depending on employment histories and the social resources available after retirement. Overall, the findings highlight the importance of incorporating a life-course and gender-sensitive perspective into policies addressing inequalities in cognitive aging.
