Practical Seminar on Anti-Semitism and the Law

04/08/2026

Once again this year, the IIR organised a specialist seminar as part of the series ‘International Law in Dialogue with Practice’, funded by the Hanns Martin Schleyer Foundation. This time, the seminar focused on the highly topical issue of ‘Anti-Semitism and the Law’.
During a two-day stay at the Parkhotel Baden from 27 to 28 April 2026, the participating students had the opportunity to present their seminar papers on various aspects of anti-Semitism and to discuss them with Prof. Dr Monika Polzin, LL.M., and Mag. Dr Antonio Martino, LL.M., Head of the Department for the Promotion of Austrian-Jewish Cultural Heritage and the Fight against Anti-Semitism at the Federal Chancellery, who also supplemented the presentations with valuable insights from his professional experience. An online expert talk was also organised with Dr Nadia Iermakov from Israel, during which the students had the opportunity to ask questions about antisemitism and its legal classification. Thanks to the experts’ contributions and the students’ engagement, substantive and well-informed discussions took place.
In addition, the exciting supporting programme offered further opportunities to engage with anti-Semitism and the historical context in Baden. Particularly noteworthy here was the joint guided tour of Jewish Baden, which marked the opening of the seminar. The exchange continued in a relaxed atmosphere over a group dinner.
