Academic Career

Maximilian Kaiser is an Assistant Professor of Business Analytics and Decision Sciences at WU Vienna. He holds a PhD (Dr. rer. oec.) in Quantitative Marketing (University of Hamburg, summa cum laude), an MSc in Statistics (LMU Munich), an MSc in Smart Data (ENSAI), and a BSc in Mathematics (University of Göttingen).

Before joining WU, Maximilian spent ten years in the alternative data industry, most recently as Director of Data Science at Grips Intelligence, and worked as a consultant for the World Bank on the Ukraine – Firms through the War 2.0 project. He also teaches Retail Analytics in the MSBA program at UCLA Anderson.

Research Interest

His research uses large-scale international data and natural experiments to study how technological, regulatory, and geopolitical shocks affect e-commerce and adjacent industries. His published work examines the impact of generative AI on e-commerce traffic and conversion, Apple’s App Tracking Transparency on online firms, and international sanctions on trade and digital intermediaries. His research has appeared in Marketing Science, Management Science, and the Journal of International Economics.
