Academic Career

Mathias Staudigl is Professor of Optimization and Decision Sciences in the Department of Business Analytics and Decision Science at WU Vienna. He earned his PhD in Economics from the University of Vienna in 2010 and subsequently held research positions at institutions including Maastricht University and the European University Institute. Before joining WU Vienna, he held a chair as Full Professor in the Department of Mathematics at the University of Mannheim. His research has received funding from the German Research Foundation, PGMO, and the European Union.

Research Interest

Mankind strives to make optimal decisions given the available information. The mathematics underlying this fundamental decision problem is mathematical optimization (also known as mathematical programming). My research is devoted to foundational topics in mathematical optimization, encompassing both theoretical analysis and numerical implementation. In particular, my group and I develop methods for large-scale optimization problems in both deterministic and stochastic environments, including applications at the interface of optimization and machine learning. Beyond this focus on fundamental research, my work is strongly motivated by concrete societal challenges.
