Academic Career

David Wozabal is Full Professor of Business Analytics and Decision Sciences at the Vienna University of Economics and Business. Before joining WU in October 2026, he held professorships at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam and the Technical University of Munich. He studied business informatics and mathematics and received his PhD in statistics from the University of Vienna in 2008.

His work has appeared in journals including Operations Research, Mathematical Programming, Manufacturing & Service Operations Management, and the European Journal of Operational Research. He is Department Editor for Energy Markets at OR Spectrum, serves on the editorial board of the European Journal of Operational Research, was Associate Editor of Operations Research and Guest Editor for Mathematical Programming.

Research Interest

His research develops methods for data-driven decision making under uncertainty, including decomposition algorithms for large-scale multistage stochastic programs, stability and approximation theory for stochastic optimization, risk-averse and distributionally robust models, the interface between optimization under uncertainty and machine learning, and stochastic game theory in the context of cooperative decision making of risk averse agents. Professor Wozabal’s applied research focusses on the energy sector: trading and operating strategies for storage, renewables and virtual power plants in short-term power markets, as well as the design and analysis of electricity markets in the context of the energy transition. He has also worked on problems in finance, logistics, and risk management.
