Junior Faculty and Young Scholars Network

What we do at JFYSN

To date, the AAISC Junior Faculty and Young Scholars Network (JFYSN) co-ordinators have organised events in a variety of formats, with the aspiration that these formats will become regular fixtures each semester. Most notably, our term card usually includes a mix of informal networking evenings, expert lecturers, career development talks, short tutorials, and an AI Research Circle meeting.

Last semester, we launched the network with an immensely popular and well-attended informal gathering in the WU Faculty Lounge. Given the success of this format, we, at periodic intervals in the term, organised informal networking evenings designed to give members the opportunity to meet each other (often for the first time!) and talk shop in a relaxed setting over drinks and nibbles. In the future, we expect to host atleast one or two such informal events per semester.

The network also kicked-off our Expert Lectures series with an engaging and insightful talk by Dr. Ayu Purwarianti (ITB, Indonesia), who spoke to network members about ITB’s ongoing efforts in building the institutional groundwork for Generative AI integration within its educational ecosystem. This format is now set to feature a distinguished scholar or practitioner, drawn from either the WU faculty or external visitors, each time, and will be held once or twice during a semester.

The inaugural meeting of the JFYSN AI Research Circle showcased the work of three emerging researchers, each at different career stages, and drawn from disciplines as diverse as political science, psychology and informatics. Presenters were invited to give short flash talks about their research, followed by Q&A and networking within the group. This format will now be held once a semester.

In future semesters, we look forward to adding two new events to our roster:

Career development talks, where we will invite in-house experts to deliver talks on job-related skills and activities. These interventions will cover topics relevant to our membership, such as information on funding opportunities, academic publishing, career paths and progression, and other key skills needed to improve employability.

We also plan to introduce tutorials into the mix as a new format, inviting either the competence centre’s senior scholars or junior scholars with advanced skills to share their hands-on experience with the very latest AI-based research tools or cutting-edge methodologies.
