“Central Bank Communication with the General Public“
Michael EHRMANN

Banque Centrale du Luxembourg Professor of Central Banking,
Frankfurt School of Finance & Management, Frankfurt/Main, Germany

Time: Wednesday, November 18, 2026, 10:30-12:00 a.m.

Location: Wirtschaftsuniversität Wien, Welthandelsplatz 1
WU Teaching Center (the building with the "rusty" facade), 4th floor, TC 4.01

Central banks have increasingly been reaching out to the general public to motivate and explain their monetary policy actions. At the same time, we have seen a rapid development in the corresponding research that studies central bank communication with the general public. This lecture lays out the reasons why central banks have increased their efforts in this area. It also discusses why such communication matters and is more challenging than communicating with expert audiences. It then reviews the evidence on whether this communication gets through to consumers and how and whether it can help achieving its main objectives of ensuring accountability, enhancing trust and guiding inflation expectations.

From 2016 to 2025 Michael Ehrmann was Head of the Monetary Policy Research Division, DG Research, European Central Bank. Previously, he had held various other important positions at the ECB since 2000, thus significantly contributing to the development of European monetary institutions. He has published widely in renowned international scholarly journals, with an emphasis on central bank communication and inflation expectations.

The public lecture is jointly organized by Aurel Schubert, Honorary
Professor at WU Vienna and former Director General Statistics, ECB and by Guido Schäfer, Department of Economics, WU Vienna.
