Unchanam, Puangchon

Puangchon Unchanam is Assistant Professor at the Institute for Sociology and Social Research, the Vienna University of Economics and Business. Previously he worked as Associate Professor in Political Science at the Department of Political Science, Naresuan University. He studied political theory, comparative politics, and political economy at The New School for Social Research, the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa, and Chulalongkorn University. He earned a Ph.D. in Political Science from the Graduate Center of the City University of New York.

His research focuses on the interconnection between the global economy, political institutions, social changes, democratization, and political ecology. His work often uses countries from Southeast Asia, especially Thailand, as a case study that represents how the real-world politics in the Global South often contradicts, complicates, or goes beyond what the existing theories predict, how socio-economic development and cultural contexts in the Global South diverge from those in the Global North, and how this difference creates political, social, and environmental effects on local people, society, animals, and nature.

He is the author of Royal Capitalism: Wealth, Class, and Monarchy in Thailand (University of Wisconsin Press, 2020). The book received Honorable Mention for the 2022 Harry J. Benda Prize from the Association of Asian Studies.
