Gender Differences in Unmet Care Needs in Later Life: The Role of Social Deprivation

A recent study published in Health & Social Care in the Community sheds new light on the systemic vulnerabilities facing aging populations. In their article, “Gender Gap in Unmet Need for Care in Later Life: The Moderating Role of Social Deprivation” researchers Viktoria Szenkurök and Daniela Weber reveal that social deprivation—encompassing isolation, poor living conditions, and low digital literacy—significantly amplifies the risk of unmet personal care needs among older women. While previous literature on gender disparities in elder care has yielded mixed results, this study pinpoints how a lack of social participation strips older women of the vital resources needed to advocate for themselves.
