Biographical Sketch
Thiago Almeida is an Associate Professor at the École supérieure d’études internationals (ESEI), at the University of Laval, in Quebec, Canada; at the SKEMA Business School Belo Horizonte, Brazil; and the Pontifical Catholic University (PUC Minas). Thiago is professor and research at the Jean Monnet Center of Excellence of the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG), and at the Jean Monnet Chair TRANSITION of the Federal University of Ceará, Brazil (UFC). He concluded two post-doctoral researches at the UFC (2026) and UFMG (2025) about climate finance, critical minerals and geoeconomic fragmentation. Thiago was invited as post-doctorate researcher at the University of Amsterdam (2025) and University of Lisbon (2024).
Thiago holds a doctorate in international investment law at the UFMG (2023), in which part of the Ph.D. research was conducted at the University of Geneva (2021-2023), awarded with a Brazilian Scholarship – CAPES. He is also a Brazilian lawyer and currently a specialist at the Development Bank of Minas Gerais, working on prospecting foreign resources with multilateral development banks. Thiago is member of the Brazil-Switzerland Network of Researchers and Professionals, a Vice President of the International Law Commission of the Brazilian Bar Association (OAB/MG) and a Coordinator of the E3 Study Group – Études sur les Économies Émergentes / Studies on Emerging Economies (almeida.thf[at]gmail.com).
Research Interests
Thiago is particularly interested in transdisciplinary studies that converge international economic law, economics, and international relations with issues related to emerging economies, the Global South perspective, BRICS+, the G20, international trade and investment, geoeconomic fragmentation, climate finance, sustainable development, multilateral development banks, and the geopolitics of critical minerals.
