Social Impact Dialog: NPO-Governance & Financial Stability

How do good governance and leadership relate to the financial stability of nonprofit organizations? What can NPOs and public funders learn from current research for their practice?

On October 29, 2026, from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., the Social Impact Research Cluster at WU Vienna invites you to the Social Impact Dialog at WU.

The starting point is a collaborative project by the Fonds Soziales Wien (FSW) and WU Vienna, which examined the relationship between financial stability and governance in FSW partner organizations from 2023 to 2025. The research findings were published in 2026 by Florentine Maier, Michael Meyer, Josef Baumüller, Christian Grünhaus, and Franka Walde in the internationally renowned journal Nonprofit Management & Leadership under the title “Nonprofit Governance and Financial Stability: A Study of Government-Funded Social Services.”

After a welcome and introduction by Christian Grünhaus, Martin Kröß, Deputy Managing Director of Fonds Soziales Wien, will open the workshop with a keynote on the importance of financial stability and good governance from the perspective of a funding organization.

The following topics will then be addressed:

  • fundamentals of NPO governance and key elements of the Austrian NPO Governance Code 2026

  • financial stability of NPOs and key indicators

  • experiences and lessons learned from the collaboration between FSW and WU

  • scientific findings on the relationship between NPO governance and financial stability

  • joint reflection on the findings and their implications for practice

The presentations will be given by Christian Grünhaus, Josef Baumüller, Franka Walde, and Florentine Maier. The concluding reflection and discussion will be led by Michael Meyer together with all authors and participants.

The workshop is aimed in particular at executives and professionals from NPOs, social enterprises, and the public sector, as well as interested researchers.
