We zoomed in on the Vienna headquarters (HQ) landscape to complement our previous reports on the overall Headquarters Landscape in Austria and on International HQs. in Austria. In the latest report “Headquarters Landscape in Austria: Vienna HQs", we investigate the composition of the HQ landscape in Austria’s capital city and provide some insights on the characteristics of its HQs.

In 2022, Vienna was again acclaimed as the most liveable city in the world (Global Liveability Index 2022 Report | Economist Intelligence Unit (eiu.com)) – a pole position that repeatedly got confirmed in the last decade, except for the first two years of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 and 2021.

The quality of life in Vienna, complemented by other characteristics such as its strategic position in the heart of Europe, the quality of its infrastructures and institutions, and the vibrant economy, makes the Austrian capital city particularly attractive for the seat of many domestic and international HQs.

We zoomed in on the Vienna HQ landscape to complement our previous reports on the overall Headquarters Landscape in Austria and on International HQs. in Austria. In the latest report “Headquarters Landscape in Austria: Vienna HQs.”, we investigate the composition of the HQ landscape in Austria’s capital city and provide some insights on the characteristics of its HQs.

Our previous report identified 1,439 HQs located in Austria. In this report, we exclusively focus on the 569 HQs based in Vienna.

Here are some interesting key findings:

  • Vienna is an attractive location for HQs: With its 569 HQs, Vienna confirms its position as an important HQ location and its relevance for the economy of the country, accounting for 39.5% of the overall HQs in Austria.

  • Vienna is a vibrant financial hub: Vienna emerges as an important financial hub, being home to 90 HQs operating in the financial and insurance sectors. Moreover, the Viennese HQ economy is dominated by the service sector, which comprises legal services, accounting, management, consulting, and other activities that are complementary to the financial services.

  • Vienna is home to a few large international HQs: Although Vienna shows a prevalence of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), the presence of a few larger international HQs based in the capital city leads to an average consolidated turnover of €379m.

  • HQs based in Vienna can exploit its strategic location to get access to Central and Eastern European countries: With 279 Viennese HQs having at least one subsidiary in Germany, Germany is the dominant location for subsidiaries, followed by Eastern European countries, such as Hungary, Czech Republic, and Slovakia.

  • Vienna´s districts have a clear industry identity: The 1st (Innere Stadt) and 3rd (Landstrasse) district primarily host HQs in the service and financial industries, whereas the manufacturing, wholesale, and retail sectors are concentrated in the 23rd district (Liesing).
